Miracle an event caused by God

"Miracles" has become a word that is used about almost anything that is strange, unusual, unexplainable or supernatural, that occurs usually for the good and against the odds. If someone survives a horrific plane crash - "It's a miracle!". If a baby suddenly pulls through a major operation - "It's a miracle!". If someone finds a cure for an illness or disease - "It's a miracle!".

In the Bible the meaning of "miracle" is much more closely defined. A miracle is a purposeful but unexpected variation from what is normal. And because it is out of the ordinary it is a sign of God's activity.

Miracles in the Bible are not seen as products of an absentee God who has suddenly intervened but rather as acts of a present God that are different from his normal activity. The worldview of the Bible is that God controls what we often call the "laws of nature." The owner of a model railway usually operates his trains by the control box but from time to time he might reach out and pick up a train and put on another track. A miracle is when God reaches out and does something unusual, like the model train owner.

Although we get used to the regular activities of God in nature it doesn't mean that these are not remarkable. Just because we might be able to explain how something works doesn't mean it is not an act of God.

So a miracle is an event caused by the activity of God apart from the customary way he acts.
