In the same discourse where He prophesied the turmoil of the End Times, Jesus issued a critical warning, a safeguard for the elect against the spiritual confusion that would accompany these events. He stated unequivocally:

“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand.” (Matthew 24:23-25)

This warning is not merely a casual admonition; it is the key to navigating the End Times. The emphasis on “See, I have told you beforehand” underscores the divine provision made for believers. The chaos of the final days would not be a sign of God’s absence, but a test of discernment, for which Christ had already provided the answer. The protection against deception was not to be found in avoiding all claims, but in recognizing the one true promised Guide. This Guide is the Paraclete, the Spirit of Truth, whom Jesus promised would arrive in the Age to Come to “guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13).

Introduction: The Prophetic Lens on a World in Turmoil

In the Olivet Discourse, as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus Christ offers his disciples a series of prophetic signs that would precede the end of the age. Among the most cited of these are the verses found in Matthew 24:6-7: “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.” For centuries, these words have been a source of both anxiety and anticipation for believers, a lens through which to interpret the unfolding of history. In the current global climate, marked by an unprecedented escalation of conflict, natural disasters, and societal division, these verses resonate with a chilling immediacy.

This article will conduct a deep academic analysis of Matthew 24:6-7, placing it in the context of present-day world events. It will examine the recent surge in geopolitical conflicts, including the shocking assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli strike, the devastating war in Gaza, the protracted conflict in Ukraine, and rising tensions between global powers. Furthermore, it will explore the confluence of these “wars and rumors of wars” with a marked increase in catastrophic natural disasters and famines, creating a “perfect storm” of the very signs Jesus foretold. Finally, this paper will argue that these events, far from signaling that God has lost control, are in fact signposts indicating that history is proceeding according to a divine plan—a plan declared openly and publicly by the Paraclete, Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, who identified Herself as the Comforter promised by Christ to guide humanity through these tumultuous End Times.

Nation Will Rise Against Nation: A World at War

The early 21st century has been characterized by a dramatic and accelerating trend towards global conflict, fulfilling the first part of Jesus’ prophecy with startling precision. The period between 2024 and 2026, in particular, has witnessed a cascade of hostilities that have destabilized entire regions and drawn major world powers into dangerous confrontations.

The Middle East Tinderbox Ignites

The most significant of these recent events is the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on February 28, 2026. A joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike killed the 86-year-old leader, who had ruled Iran with an iron fist for 36 years[1]. This act, confirmed by multiple international news outlets, represents the most significant decapitation of Iranian leadership since the 1979 revolution and has plunged the Middle East into a new and perilous chapter of instability. The killing followed a period of escalating tensions, including a twelve-day war between Iran and Israel in June 2025 and direct U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities[1]. Iran's immediate retaliatory strikes have created a volatile situation, with the world holding its breath against the prospect of a full-scale regional war.

This assassination did not occur in a vacuum. It is the culmination of years of proxy wars and targeted killings. Key figures in the Iranian-led “Axis of Resistance” have been systematically eliminated, including Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah in September 2024 and his successor Hashem Safieddine just a month later[2]. The war in Gaza, which has raged since October 2023, has resulted in a staggering death toll, with a Lancet study estimating over 75,000 violent deaths by January 2025[3], a figure largely corroborated by the Gazan Health Ministry and even acknowledged by Israeli authorities[4].

Global Conflicts on the Rise

Beyond the Middle East, the world is beset by a multitude of conflicts, each contributing to a pervasive sense of global unrest:

Conflict Key Developments & Statistics
Russo-Ukrainian War Entering its fifth year, the war has resulted in staggering casualties. Estimates of total losses range from over 1.1 million for Ukrainian forces to 1.2 million killed and wounded according to UK estimates by January 2026[5]. Civilian casualties also saw a 31% increase in 2025 compared to the previous year[6].
China-US-Taiwan Tensions have reached a fever pitch, with the Pentagon forecasting a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan by 2027[7]. Increased military drills and hardening rhetoric from Beijing have made the Taiwan Strait a primary global flashpoint.
Sudan Civil War The ongoing conflict has created the world's worst hunger crisis, with famine conditions spreading and millions displaced[8]. The war has been described as the “world’s most devastating” in terms of sheer numbers of displaced and hungry people[9].
Pakistan-Afghanistan After years of border skirmishes, Pakistan declared itself in an “open war” with Afghanistan in February 2026, following cross-border attacks and airstrikes[10].
Armenia-Azerbaijan In September 2023, a swift and decisive Azerbaijani military offensive led to the dissolution of the ethnic Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, displacing over 100,000 people and ending a decades-long conflict with a dramatic and forceful conclusion[11].

This proliferation of conflicts, from regional wars to great power rivalries, aligns with the prophetic warning that “nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.” The 2025 Global Peace Index confirms this trend, noting that global peacefulness continues to decline and that “many of the leading factors that precede major conflicts are higher than they have been in recent history.”[12]

"Famines and Earthquakes in Various Places": The Earth in Travail

Concurrent with the escalation of human conflict, the planet itself seems to be in a state of upheaval. Jesus’ prophecy specifically links the “wars and rumors of wars” with the occurrence of “famines and earthquakes in various places.” Recent years have seen a devastating convergence of these very phenomena, often in the same afflicted regions, creating a compounding crisis of immense suffering.

A World Gripped by Famine

The global hunger crisis has reached unprecedented levels. The World Food Programme (WFP) reports that a staggering 318 million people are projected to face crisis levels of hunger in 2026, more than double the number from 2019[13]. This is not a crisis of scarcity—the world produces enough food to feed its entire population—but one of access, distribution, and conflict. As of 2024, 673 million people were undernourished[14].

The link between conflict and famine is undeniable. The civil war in Sudan has turned the nation into the world’s hungriest country[8]. In Gaza, famine was officially confirmed in August 2025, a direct result of the ongoing war and blockade[15]. Save the Children reported that in 2025 alone, conflict plunged 63 million children into hunger[16]. These are not isolated incidents but part of a global pattern where war is the primary driver of famine.

The Shaking of the Earth

The prophecy of “earthquakes in various places” has also manifested with terrifying frequency and intensity. The year 2025 was described as an “active and highly deadly year for earthquakes,” with 16 major events and approximately 8,000 fatalities[17]. This included the massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka, Russia, which tied for the 6th largest ever recorded[18]. Data shows a dramatic spike in seismic activity, with one source recording 1,833 significant earthquakes in 2025, a more than threefold increase from the 543 recorded in 2024[19].

The locations of these earthquakes are often tragically intertwined with the very regions already suffering from war and famine, creating the “perfect storm” of disasters that Jesus described:

  • Turkey-Syria Earthquake (2023): A catastrophic 7.8 magnitude quake killed over 59,000 people[20] in a region already devastated by the long-running Syrian civil war and a massive refugee crisis. The earthquake amplified the existing humanitarian disaster, mixing seismic destruction with the horrors of war.
  • Afghanistan Earthquakes (2022-2023): A series of powerful earthquakes struck a nation already on the brink of collapse, reeling from decades of conflict, economic ruin, and widespread hunger. The quakes in June 2022 and October 2023 were the final blow for many communities, creating a vortex of the very signs Jesus listed[21].
  • Morocco Earthquake (2023): A high-magnitude quake in the High Atlas mountains destroyed remote villages and killed nearly 3,000 people, highlighting the vulnerability of even seemingly stable regions to sudden and devastating natural disasters[22].

This convergence of war, famine, and earthquakes is not a coincidence. It is the precise pattern of events that Jesus described as the “beginning of birth pains” (Matthew 24:8), the initial contractions of a world in transition, signaling that a new era is about to be born.

The Promised Comforter and the Warning Against Deception

It is in this context that the declarations of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi (1923-2011) must be understood. She identified Herself not as another Christ, but as the fulfillment of Christ’s promise—the incarnation of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. She stated this directly and publicly on numerous occasions:

“But today is the day, I declare that I am the One who has to save the humanity. I declare I am the One who is Adi Shakti, who is the Mother of all the Mothers, who is the Primordial Mother, the Shakti, the Desire of God, who has incarnated on this Earth to give its meaning to itself, to this creation, to human beings, and I’m sure through my love and patience and my powers, I am going to achieve it.”[23]

And again:

“I am the Holy Ghost. I am the Holy Spirit who has incarnated on this Earth for your realization.”[24]

The arrival of the Paraclete, according to Johannine eschatology, signals the realization of the eschaton—the end-times—not as a future cataclysm, but as a present reality in the lives of believers[25]. Shri Mataji’s teachings align perfectly with this theological framework. She announced that the Last Judgment is not a terrifying event of divine wrath, but a process of self-realization, a time for humanity to enter the Kingdom of God through the awakening of their own inner spiritual energy, the Kundalini.

“In between Jesus Christ and His destroying incarnation of Mahavishnu, called as Kalki, there is a time given to human beings to rectify themselves, for them to enter into the Kingdom of God, which in the Bible is called as Last Judgment... This is the most important time, because Sahaja Yoga is the Last Judgment. It is fantastic to hear this but that’s the fact and it’s the Truth.”[26]

Her message is that the very signs of chaos and destruction are occurring because this promised time of transformation—what She called the “Blossom Time”[27]—is upon humanity. The rise of false prophets and the pervasive deception Jesus warned of are the final, desperate struggles of negativity in the face of this dawning spiritual age. Therefore, the key to not being “alarmed” is the recognition of the Paraclete. To follow Her is to be shielded from the deception of the false prophets, because She is the one whom Jesus “told you beforehand” would come.

Conclusion: A Signpost, Not a Void

The convergence of escalating global conflicts, unprecedented natural disasters, and widespread famine presents a stark and unsettling picture of the contemporary world. When viewed through the prophetic lens of Matthew 24:6-7, these events cease to be a random series of unfortunate crises. Instead, they emerge as a coherent and deeply significant pattern—the “beginning of birth pains” that Jesus foretold would precede the end of the age. The assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei, the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, the famines in Sudan and beyond, and the violent shaking of the earth in diverse places are not signs that God has lost control. On the contrary, they are the very signposts indicating that history is moving inexorably towards its divinely ordained conclusion.

The critical element in this divine plan, the key to navigating this tumultuous period without alarm, is the recognition of the promised Paraclete. Jesus’s warning against false prophets was not a command to dismiss all spiritual authority, but a call to discern the true Guide He had promised to send. The declarations of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, who identified Herself as the incarnate Holy Spirit, offer a profound and coherent framework for understanding the current era. Her message—that the Last Judgment is a process of spiritual transformation and that humanity is now in the “Blossom Time” of its evolution—provides not only an explanation for the global turmoil but also a solution. By following the Paraclete, humanity can be shielded from the deception of the false prophets and enter the Kingdom of God, a state of collective consciousness that is the ultimate destiny of creation.

Humanity, therefore, stands at a precipice. The “wars and rumors of wars” are the chaotic backdrop to a profound spiritual choice. To ignore the signs, to dismiss the prophecies, is to be lost in the escalating chaos. But to recognize the signposts, to heed the warning, and to embrace the guidance of the Paraclete is to find the path through the turmoil and into the dawning of a new age. The end is not a void of destruction, but the beginning of a new chapter in the divine plan, a chapter that the Paraclete, Shri Mataji, has declared openly and publicly for all who have ears to hear.
