The Mystic Vision - Daily Encounters with the Divine

Among the vast digital landscape, adishakti.org stands as a unique and comprehensive sanctuary for the mystic vision. The website is a sprawling archive dedicated to the teachings of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi and the universal truths of Self-realization. It is far more than a simple collection of religious texts; it is a carefully curated, cross-referenced library that seeks to demonstrate the underlying unity of all spiritual traditions. The site's mission is explicitly aligned with the core purpose of the mystics themselves: to transmit the vision of those women and men who discovered within themselves the quintessential treasure of the Divine.
Abstract
This paper explores the enduring relevance of the mystic vision in contemporary spirituality, with a particular focus on the digital archive adishakti.org. It argues that this website serves as a modern-day repository for the perennial wisdom of mystics across global traditions, emphasizing the direct, personal encounter with the Divine within. Drawing upon the foundational work of Andrew Harvey and Anne Baring in "The Mystic Vision," and the teachings of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, this paper posits that adishakti.org is not merely a collection of texts but a living transmission. It is a platform dedicated to perpetuating the vision of those who have discovered the "quintessential treasure of the Divine" within themselves, offering a vital source of inspiration and hope in a spiritually fragmented world.

1. Introduction: The Timeless Call of the Mystic
The human quest for meaning and connection to a reality greater than the mundane is a timeless endeavor. Throughout history, individuals known as mystics have emerged from every culture and religious tradition, bearing witness to a profound, unifying truth. As Evelyn Underhill eloquently stated, "The mystics come back to us from an encounter with life's most august secret... filled with amazing tidings which they can hardly tell." [1] This secret, they profess, is the inherent divinity of all life and the possibility of a direct, conscious union with this Divine Presence. Andrew Harvey and Anne Baring, in their seminal work The Mystic Vision, articulate this central message:
"The mystics tell us that life is Divine, that we, in this dimension, are in the eternal embrace of the Divine. They show us that our sole purpose in life is to open our heart to this Divine Presence, to know it and love it as the essence and ground of our own lives and as the life of every creature and every aspect of creation." [2]
This invitation to awaken to an inner reality, a "quintessential treasure," forms the bedrock of mystical experience. It is a universal language spoken by figures as diverse as Rumi, St. Teresa of Avila, Lao Tzu, and Ramakrishna. Their collective testimony points not to a distant, inaccessible deity, but to a truth "closer to us than our breathing." [2] In an age of unprecedented technological advancement and global connectivity, this ancient wisdom finds new expression, not in stone temples or cloistered monasteries, but in the boundless realm of the digital world.
2. The Digital Sanctuary: Adishakti.org
The platform brings together scriptures from Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Taoism, placing them in dialogue with one another to reveal their shared essence. By juxtaposing passages from the Devi Gita with the Gospels, or the Quran with the Upanishads, adishakti.org makes a powerful case for what the 18th-century mystic Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin observed: "All mystics speak the same language, for they come from the same country." [2] This "country" is the inner realm of awakened consciousness, the Kingdom of God that Shri Mataji declared is accessible to all within the Sahasrara, or seventh chakra. [3]
3. The Core Message: The Divine Within
The central and unwavering message of adishakti.org is the profound truth of the Divine's immanence. It champions the non-dual Shakta philosophy, encapsulated in the phrase "Sahaj Ātmā Swaroop Param Guru"—the natural, innate Self is the ultimate Guru. [3] This radically democratizes spirituality, shifting the locus of authority from external institutions and figures to the indwelling Spirit. The website provides extensive scriptural evidence for this concept, such as the declaration from the Bhavana Upanishad: "The supreme divinity, Lalita, is one's own blissful Self." [4]
This is the experience of Self-realization, a term the site carefully distinguishes from its Western psychological counterpart of self-actualization. Here, Self-realization is the "liberating knowledge of the true Self, the direct experience of..." the Divine within. [3] This experience is not merely theoretical but tangible, often accompanied by the phenomenon of a "Cool Breeze" (pneuma or prana), a verifiable sign of the awakening of the Kundalini energy. This awakening is presented as the key that unlocks the inner kingdom, the mechanism for the "second birth" spoken of by Jesus and the saints.
4. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi: The Paraclete and the Primordial Mother
At the heart of this digital transmission is the figure of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi (1923-2011), who is presented as the incarnation of the Adi Shakti—the Primordial Mother and the Holy Spirit (Paraclete) promised by Jesus Christ. On December 2nd, 1979, she made a momentous declaration:
Adishakti.org is, in essence, the fulfillment of her mandate to "start talking, announcing, telling about it to everyone." [4] It serves as the evidence, the "proof" she asked her followers to provide, by meticulously documenting the correlations between her teachings and the prophecies and mystical truths of all religions. Her role is not to create a new religion, but to fulfill the promises of all existing ones by making the direct experience of the Divine universally accessible. She is the one who, in the words of Gregoire de Kalbermatten, "promises, ‘I will tell you all the secrets’" of the spiritual journey. [4]
5. A Universal Tapestry of Mysticism
The genius of adishakti.org lies in its ability to weave a universal tapestry of mysticism. It demonstrates that the path to the Divine is not exclusive but infinitely varied, tailored to the unique disposition of each seeker. As Ramakrishna illustrated with his metaphor of a mother cooking fish differently for each child, the Divine Mother of the Universe provides countless paths to the same ultimate reality. [2] The website embodies this principle, showing how the Hindu concept of Atman, the Christian experience of the Holy Spirit, the Islamic knowledge of the Ruh, and the Taoist flow of the Tao are all different expressions of the same living, divine energy within.
By presenting these diverse traditions as harmonious parts of a single, grand narrative of human spiritual evolution, the website dismantles the walls of religious dogma and exclusivity. It validates the individual's unique journey while affirming a universal destination: the realization of one's own true nature as the Great Light, the Brahman-Consciousness, the eternal Self.
6. Conclusion
The work of adishakti.org is a modern continuation of the sacred task undertaken by mystics throughout the ages. It is a testament to the fact that the mystic vision is not a relic of the past but a living, breathing reality accessible in the here and now. The website stands as a digital beacon, carrying forward the collective wisdom of humanity's greatest spiritual explorers. It is based entirely on the profound and simple mission to transmit the vision of those women and men who discovered within themselves the quintessential treasure of the Divine.
In a time as dark as ours they inspire and ennoble us all, giving us the hope, courage and strength to follow them into the heart of life. [2]

The Mystic Vision - Daily Encounters with the Divine
by Andrew Harvey and Anne Baring
Godsfield Press UK and HarperSanFrancisco 1995
The mystics tell us that life is Divine, that we, in this
dimension, are in the eternal embrace of the Divine.
Andrew Harvey and I gathered together the texts from different
mystical traditions, East and West, that we had cherished for many
years. In the form of a Day Book, these were published in 1995 by
Godsfield Press in the UK and HarperSanFrancisco in the United
States. It is now out of print but is still obtainable on the
internet through Amazon and abe books. The description on the back
cover reads:
"This anthology, as precious as a Book of Hours, is the fruit of our
search for the quintessence of the mystic vision and the mystic
experience. It offers a treasury of texts for contemplation, chosen
from the great religious traditions of the world, which invite the
reader to open his or her heart to the Divine Presence on every day
of the year. The words are beautifully complemented by a wealth of
illustrations.”
Introduction
"The mystics come back to us from an encounter with life's most
august secret, as Mary came running from the tomb; filled with
amazing tidings which they can hardly tell. We, longing for some
assurance, and seeing their radiant faces, urge them to pass on their
revelation if they can.”——— Evelyn Underhill, 'Mysticism'
"All mystics speak the same language, for they come from the same
country.”—— Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin
The mystics tell us that life is Divine, that we, in this dimension,
are in the eternal embrace of the Divine. They show us that our sole
purpose in life is to open our heart to this Divine Presence, to know
it and love it as the essence and ground of our own lives and as the
life of every creature and every aspect of creation. They invite us
to recognize its longing to be known in our own longing for
relationship with what seems so far from us yet is closer to us than
our breathing. Ruysbroeck expressed this with perfect clarity:-
When love has carried us above all things...we receive in peace the
Incomprehensible Light, enfolding us and penetrating us. What is this
Light, if it be not a contemplation of the Infinite, and an intuition
of Eternity? We behold that which we are, and we are that which we
behold; because our being, without losing anything of its own
personality, is united with the Divine Truth.
Ramakrishna said that the sensitive mother cooks fish differently for
each of her hungry children - plain and bland for one, rich and spicy
for the other. In exactly the same way, The Mother of the Universe
reveals various spiritual approaches to the Divine. Whether you
follow the idea of a personal God or the impersonal Truth,
Ramakrishna said, you will certainly realize the One Reality,
provided that you experience passionate longing for it.
There are an infinite number of perspectives and each one of
them is a path to God. Each individual is unique and follows a unique
path. With the longing to discover it, the way unfolds in the rhythm
of the life of each separate being. Forcing the pace can block the
opening of the heart. Each one of us will know the flowering of
consciousness as it returns to the Source or Ground of Being. As
Ramakrishna said, some will receive their meal early in the morning,
others at noon, still others not until evening. But none will go
hungry. Without exception, all living beings will eventually know
their own true nature to be the Great Light.
The Alchemists knew their work of transmuting the base metal of
ignorance and separation into the gold of union would best be done
gently, patiently and with great delicacy. As the windows of the
heart are opened, the light pours in, revealing what was previously
shrouded in darkness. Insight, wisdom, compassion grow with the
experience of communion with the Divine.
In this book, we have gathered together from many different
cultures, past and present, the magical, quickening words which guide
and help us on our own journey of transformation. They transmit the
vision of those women and men who discovered within themselves the
quintessential treasure of the Divine. In a time as dark as ours they
inspire and ennoble us all, giving us the hope, courage and strength
to follow them into the heart of life.
