Till today Sunday, October 29, 2006 they are unable to muster the courage and conviction to publicly admit even Her true identity, let alone Her Divine Message to humanity!

When the Divine walks the Earth, silence is betrayal. This page confronts the spiritual leadership of Sahaja Yoga for its failure to affirm the eschatological truth of Shri Mataji’s incarnation. The Adi Shakti has revealed Herself, the Cool Breeze flows, and the Last Judgment unfolds. Yet WCASY remains mute. Courage and conviction are not optional—they are the measure of truth. And truth, once denied, becomes hypocrisy.

The Unproclaimed Message: A Crisis of Conviction in Sahaja Yoga

This paper examines the internal conflict within the Sahaja Yoga movement concerning the public proclamation of its founder's, Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi's, divine identity. It analyzes claims from internal critics that the World Council for the Advancement of Sahaja Yoga (WCASY) has failed to uphold Shri Mataji's mandate to announce her as the Adi Shakti and the Paraclete, thereby betraying her mission. Drawing on primary sources from within the movement and contextualizing the issue within the academic study of new religious movements, this paper explores the theological and organizational dynamics at play. The central thesis is that the WCASY's alleged silence represents a pivotal crisis of conviction, with significant implications for the future of the Sahaja Yoga movement and its message of collective spiritual transformation.

Introduction

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi (1923-2011), the founder of the Sahaja Yoga movement, is a figure of profound spiritual significance to her followers. Born in India, she established Sahaja Yoga in 1970, a meditation practice centered on the awakening of the Kundalini energy to achieve self-realization. [1] However, beyond the practice of meditation, a deeper, more contentious issue lies at the heart of the movement: the public declaration of Shri Mataji's divine nature. While she herself made numerous unambiguous statements about her identity as the Adi Shakti (the primordial power) and the Paraclete (the Comforter promised by Jesus), a significant portion of her followers, particularly the leadership body known as the World Council for the Advancement of Sahaja Yoga (WCASY), have been accused of failing to proclaim this message to the world. This paper will explore the origins and implications of this internal crisis, analyzing the arguments of those who see this silence as a profound betrayal of Shri Mataji's divine mandate.

The Divine Proclamations of Shri Mataji

Central to the controversy is the unambiguous nature of Shri Mataji's declarations regarding her own divine status. These were not veiled allusions, but direct and powerful statements made to her followers. On March 21, 1983, in Sydney, Australia, she proclaimed:

“I am the Adi Shakti. I am the One who has come on this Earth for the first time in this form to do this tremendous task. The more you understand this the better it would be. You will change tremendously. I knew I'll have to say that openly one day and we have said it. But now it is you people who have to prove it that I am that!”[2]

This declaration is not an isolated incident. Shri Mataji consistently and emphatically urged her followers to spread the message of her advent and the significance of the times. She framed Sahaja Yoga not merely as a self-improvement technique, but as the mechanism for the Last Judgment, a concept she redefined as a time of spiritual transformation and choice, rather than condemnation. She stated:

“Today, Sahaja Yoga has reached the state of Mahayoga, which is en-masse evolution manifested through it. It is this day's Yuga Dharma. It is the way the Last Judgment is taking place. Announce it to all the seekers of truth, to all the nations of the world, so that nobody misses the blessings of the Divine to achieve their meaning, their absolute, their spirit.”[3]

Her teachings positioned her as the fulfillment of prophecies across multiple religions, the incarnation of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete promised by Jesus, and the Adi Shakti of Hindu tradition. This syncretic theological framework, while internally consistent, presents a significant challenge for public dissemination, a challenge that the WCASY appears to have shied away from.

The World Council and the Accusation of Betrayal

In December 2003, Shri Mataji established the World Council for the Advancement of Sahaja Yoga (WCASY), a body of 34 members designated as world leaders. The stated purpose of the council was to “stimulate the further growth of Sahaja Yoga and to provide support to the efforts of all the national collectives.”[4] Shri Mataji’s announcement of the council’s formation emphasized the urgency of the times and the responsibility of Sahaja Yogis to spread the message:

“The world is in turmoil today. People everywhere are anxious about the future. What they need is the soothing, uniting, elevating spiritual message of Sahaja Yoga... Sahaja Yogis have a momentous responsibility at this crucial time in human history. They have to spread Sahaja Yoga in all the parts of the world by written and spoken word.... For this purpose, a well thought out approach is required.”[5]

However, critics from within the movement, most notably Jagbir Singh, argue that the WCASY has fundamentally failed in this mission. The core of the accusation is that the council, despite its mandate, has been “unable to muster the courage and conviction to publicly admit even Her true identity, let alone Her Divine Message to humanity!”[6] This failure is presented not as a mere strategic disagreement, but as a profound betrayal of Shri Mataji’s trust and a dereliction of their spiritual duty. The critics contend that by focusing on the more palatable aspects of Sahaja Yoga, such as stress relief and well-being, the WCASY has diluted the core message and obscured the very reason for Shri Mataji’s incarnation.

This alleged betrayal is further compounded by the comparison to the disciples of Jesus. The critics draw a direct parallel between the WCASY’s silence and the denial of Christ by his followers. They argue that just as Peter denied Jesus, the Sahaja Yoga leadership has denied Shri Mataji’s divinity, choosing organizational preservation and social acceptance over the proclamation of a challenging and potentially divisive truth. This act of omission, they contend, has had dire consequences, leaving humanity in spiritual darkness and preventing the collective resurrection that Shri Mataji came to initiate.[7]

Theological and Organizational Dynamics

From an academic perspective, the dilemma faced by the Sahaja Yoga leadership is not unique. New religious movements (NRMs) that posit a living or recent divine incarnation often grapple with the tension between preserving the founder's radical claims and achieving broader social acceptance. The proclamation of a leader as a divine being, particularly within a globalized and often skeptical world, can be a significant barrier to entry for potential converts. The academic study of NRMs highlights that the process of institutionalization often involves a moderation of the most challenging or esoteric aspects of the founder's teachings in favor of a more accessible and less controversial public image.[8]

The WCASY's alleged reluctance to publicly proclaim Shri Mataji as the Adi Shakti and Paraclete can be interpreted through this lens. The council may be making a strategic calculation that a focus on the health and wellness benefits of Sahaja Yoga meditation is a more effective means of attracting new members than a direct confrontation with established religious paradigms. This approach, while seen as a betrayal by some, can be viewed as a pragmatic attempt to ensure the survival and growth of the movement in a pluralistic and often hostile religious marketplace. The fear of ridicule, the potential for being labeled a "cult," and the desire to be seen as a legitimate and beneficial organization are powerful motivating factors for the leadership of any NRM.

Furthermore, the concept of the Paraclete itself carries a heavy theological weight. In Christian theology, the Paraclete, or Holy Spirit, is a central figure in the Trinity. The claim that a specific individual is the incarnation of the Paraclete is a direct challenge to mainstream Christian doctrine and is likely to be met with strong opposition. The WCASY's hesitation may therefore stem from a desire to avoid direct conflict with established Christian denominations, which could lead to accusations of heresy and further marginalize the movement.

Conclusion

The internal conflict within the Sahaja Yoga movement over the proclamation of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi’s divine identity represents a critical juncture in the history of this new religious movement. The accusations leveled against the WCASY—that they have betrayed their founder’s mission by remaining silent—highlight a fundamental tension between prophetic immediacy and organizational pragmatism. Shri Mataji’s own words provide a clear mandate for the open declaration of her identity and the significance of her advent. Her followers who advocate for this proclamation see it as a matter of spiritual integrity and obedience to their guru.

Conversely, the WCASY’s alleged silence can be understood as a strategic response to the challenges of institutionalization. The desire for social acceptance, the fear of being marginalized as a “cult,” and the pragmatic calculation that a less confrontational approach will attract more followers are all powerful forces that shape the development of new religious movements. The case of Sahaja Yoga and the WCASY is a compelling case study in the complex dynamics of religious leadership, succession, and the preservation of a founder’s original message.

Ultimately, the situation remains a crisis of conviction. The path chosen by the Sahaja Yoga leadership will determine the future trajectory of the movement. Will it remain a relatively quiet, meditation-focused group, or will it embrace the radical, world-transforming message of its founder? The answer to this question will not only shape the legacy of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi but will also provide a valuable lesson for the study of religion and the enduring power of divine proclamation in the modern world.

Sahaja Writing

Sunday, October 29, 2006

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Sahaja Writing is a newspaper devoted to encouraging Sahaja Yogis to write, in a way that communicates the truth of our extraordinary experiences and transformations to the rest of the world. Sahaja Yogis are free to improve what is written here, or to suggest how it might be improved.

Please see it at: https://sahajawriting.blogspot.com and send submissions or comments to info@...

Above all, please support this initiative with your bandhans, love and contributions.

"Are we, as Sahaja yogis, creatures without experience, without the ability to think, reason and create"? Clearly we are not the former, indeed the plethora of our extraordinary experiences, if we can find a way of expressing them in a form that would communicate them to the rest of humankind, could play a role in creating the environment that would bring about the desire for human beings to be enlightened, thence transformed. We don't think too much, at least not in the random uncontrolled fashion of most people, but maybe we have to be able to find a way to express ourselves effectively to the rest of humankind? Can we reason and create? It is to be hoped that in time, yogis will produce works of art that will trail-blaze the new Jerusalem that our children will undoubtedly see. I am reminded of a comment, by Grégoire de Kalbermatten, that we are the foundation of the building, and foundations are always a bit roughly finished and eventually buried under the ground. But what goes on top of the foundations, the finished and polished work, is what people will see - our children and grandchildren.

I hope that some of us will write and offer a description of the joys and power of innocence and of thoughtless awareness.

I don't think that the way to answer the inadvertent silliness and nonsense within writing such as the above, is to deal with it line by line, but instead, as Grégoire has so valiantly attempted, with his novel The Legend of Dagad Trikon, and now recently, Linda Williams with the first volume in her Keys of Wisdom trilogy, we need now to 'set out our stall' in the mainstream of society and to publicly stand up for what we believe in, what we know as truth, through the grace of our Holy Mother, Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, the living God."

Shri Mataji had indeed tried unsuccessfully since the 1980s to convince Her devotees to openly proclaim Her advent and Divine Message.

"Tell all the nations and tell all the people all over the Great Message that the Time of Resurrection is here. Now! At this time, and that you are capable of doing it."

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi

"I am the Adi Shakti. I am the One who has come on this Earth for the first time in this form to do this tremendous task. The more you understand this the better it would be. You will change tremendously. I knew I'll have to say that openly one day and we have said it. But now it is you people who have to prove it that I am that!"

Shri Adi-Shakti Devi

"Today, Sahaja Yoga has reached the state of Mahayoga, which is en-masse evolution manifested through it. It is this day's Yuga Dharma. It is the way the Last Judgment is taking place. Announce it to all the seekers of truth, to all the nations of the world, so that nobody misses the blessings of the Divine to achieve their meaning, their absolute, their spirit."

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi

"But for that we have to remember that we have developed lots of antidotes in England. Like the words I've seen people use, very common is, 'That may be too much'; 'It may be too much'; 'They're frightened'; 'One shouldn't say too much.'

You should, when you say too much at least little bit will go into their heads. So you have to say too much. Say what you want. There should be exuberance, exuberance of your ideas, so that something goes into their heads. They know that you're sincere, you're saying it sincerely, you cannot contain within yourself. Emphatically you have to say these. That's what everybody did. All those who were great incarnations said it with such concern, with such force. In the same way, you have to say without any fear. 'Oh, that may be too much, Mother it was too much for him.' Let him be blasted! Doesn't matter, say everything that you have to say. Absolutely, with full heart.

But when people come to Sahaja Yoga, when they come for say, a workshop or something, we try to be the same party people. Like in the party, you see, 'What will you have?' Then we'll say alright, let me think, 'What did I have yesterday, so I'll have today this thing.' It's like a shopping going on. No, you have to say, 'We have this and please have it now, otherwise you won't have it. This is the time!' Let them say what they like. It's important. I see sometimes your SDP conferences and all these, the way they speak, they just blast you, I mean, hammer in your head. Why should we not, when this is the truth. Why should we not tell them and talk to them in that manner. We think by being gentle... alright gentleness is different, but I mean to say by saying less than I say, understatement. It's typical English - 'That might be too much.'

In Sahaja Yoga it is such a lot that how much are you going to pour out, can never be too much. So be careful on that. When you've to say it, say it in a very blasty way, doesn't matter. What are they going to do? They can't crucify me this time, can they? They dare not. Otherwise perfectly alright, nothing can touch me. And even crucifixion cannot touch me, you know that.

So you better say what you've found out, in a big way. And tell them in a big way, of course loving and gentle manner but tell them, the concern should be there. Alright?... I don't say you aggress but don't say anything less, understatement is not needed. There should not be any balancing in that. Those people who'll be appeased by that will not be good Sahaja Yogis. They cannot come in the Kingdom of God. We don't have to be begging of them but we have to honour them, we have to respect them, we have to be kind to them, but we have to give them what we have. Like in the family, you go, you get everything from the fridge and give it to them, they'll be very happy to take it whatever you like, what a spread. But if you put one little fish and two eggs for ten people with one chili to say that it is Sahaja Yoga, maybe a lemon, they will think, 'What's this going on here? Wishy-washy stuff.'"

The Messiah-Paraclete-Ruh-Devi
Sheffield, UK, August 21 1985

Over the decades the Sahaja Yoga leadership have given various excuses and reasons for being unable to do so. Till today Sunday, October 29, 2006 they are unable to muster the courage and conviction to publicly admit even Her true identity, let alone Her Divine Message to humanity!

Alan Wherry, it is still all hype, hypocrisy and hot air,

The World Council - WCASY

In December, 2003, before She left America, Shri Mataji created The World Council for the Advancement of Sahaja Yoga. The purpose of this body is to stimulate the further growth of Sahaja Yoga and to provide support to the efforts of all the national collectives.

The World Council for the Advancement of Sahaja Yoga is composed of 34 members designated as world leaders. Advisors of the Council for financial, legal and communications affairs have also been identified. The Council is expected to meet twice a year.

The announcement from Shri Mataji reads as follows:

"The world is in turmoil today. People everywhere are anxious about the future. What they need is the soothing, uniting, elevating spiritual message of Sahaja Yoga. They have to be enabled to experience 'Self Realization' and thereby attain inner transformation. Only then will they begin to regard all human beings as members of one global family regardless of their race, culture etc. Only then will they discard hatred and violence.... Sahaja Yogis have a momentous responsibility at this crucial time in human history. They have to spread Sahaja Yoga in all the parts of the world by written and spoken word.... Dear All,

Shri Mataji said in 2003 that a well thought out approach is required for a world in turmoil. People everywhere are anxious about the future. What they need is the soothing, uniting, elevating spiritual message of Sahaja Yoga i.e., the announcement of Her Incarnation and Divine Message of the Last Judgment and Resurrection that will convince seekers to get the Self-realization.

What we have is WCASY still unable to muster the courage and conviction to publicly admit even Her true identity, let alone Her Divine Message to humanity! They are either deaf to Shri Mataji's plea that "Sahaja Yogis have a momentous responsibility at this crucial time in human history" or just do not have the conscience and courage to uphold the dharma and duty entrusted to them.

However, Her wishes that:

"Sahaja Yogis have a momentous responsibility at this crucial time in human history. They have to spread Sahaja Yoga in all the parts of the world by written and spoken word.... For this purpose, a well thought out approach is required."

are being executed to the letter. I believe by February 21, 2013 we will have all the knowledge and information covering all aspects of Shri Mataji's incarnation, teachings and message. Every post here helps in building this database that will allow humanity to cross-examine the soothing, uniting, elevating spiritual message of Sahaja Yoga. It is the permanent written word that can help dispel ignorance, bestow enlightenment and establish the faith necessary to sustain a lifetime of Self-realization. Only with the collective truth that embraces all religions, scriptures and messengers will the believers be enabled to experience "Self Realization" and thereby attain inner transformation.

It does not matter now if WCASY and their followers do not publicly admit even Shri Mataji's true identity, let alone Her Divine Message to humanity. It is now being collectively done on a steady, daily basis and archived. My pranaam to all.

Jai Shri Ganapathy,
jagbir
