Iblis : "I will cause them all to deviate"

Evidence of Satan's presence in the smoke billowing up from the Twin Towers
Image of the World Trade Center fire reveal
the face of Satan. The images below come
from, respectively, CNN's television coverage
and a photo taken by freelance photographer
Mark D. Phillips (who subsequently sold his
picture to Associated Press) as New York's
World Trade Center towers burned after the
terrorist attack on 11 September 2001.
Neither image was manipulated.
"As if the images of conflagration and death that hijacked our TV screens and dominated our newspapers in the aftermath of September 11, 2001 weren't monstrous and unfathomable enough, some who examined those images frame-by-frame said they saw literal evidence of Satan's presence in the smoke billowing up from the Twin Towers. Albeit for only a split second, they claimed, the face of the Devil himself emerged from the fiery chaos to reveal his hand in the devastation. Skeptics objected that it was merely an example of pareidolia — the human tendency to perceive recognizable patterns in random sensori stimuli. A pair of computer scientists in Texas analyzed the images and concluded the phenomena were completely explicable in terms of natural physical processes. Whether one believes they were natural in origin or supernatural, the haunting, iconic images remain part of the legacy of 9/11, in particular our struggle to understand and cope with the enormity of this seminal event in world history.”- David Emery's Urban Legends Blog

Satan in the Smoke? A Photojournalist's 9/11 Story
PROLOGUE

“A call came the day after we survived the end of the world. It was my photo agent, Kevin Kushel,

'Mark, you have a face in your picture.'

The past two days were like a dream. Terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center. I worked through it, then I looked at the first picture I took, just after the second plane hit and there it was. A face.

Twenty five years in photo journalism told me there had to be a mistake.

The face I saw in the picture sent via the Associated Press as NY142, one of the first images transmitted worldwide, was simply light and shadow. But as I stare at it, all the years brought up in a religious family fought for my attention.

The image I saw was distinct. Eyes, nose, mouth, horns. It was an image from a nightmare, leering at us, triumphant in its evil as it hung onto Tower 2 of the World Trade Center.

It could not be real.

Or could it.

For the next 10 weeks, I found myself defending an image I wasn't even sure I believed in.

Some thought God was talking through me, warning folks about evil... some thought Satan got a toehold. Others thought I was some kind of a prankster.

Kenny Irby of the Poynter Institute, Time Magazine, the New York Times, all lumped it with hoaxes until I proved them wrong. The one thing I was certain of was that I had not created the image. I took an image and transmitted it as I had thousands of times before. Never had one of my images caused such an uproar.

If ever there was an event that was the personification of evil, it was this one. Had I captured the Devil? It was up to others to decide what they saw. I look at the image and know what I see. After 10 years, I do believe the hijackers were evil. If that is what I captured, even if it is just 'smoke and light,' I know what it represents to me.

It has been called the ultimate Rorschach test.

What is that image?

A demonic face stared out from the smoke at the World Trade Center, newspaper readers nationwide say.

by Bryce Hoffman

The Saginaw News

A front-page photograph on more than 13,000 copies of Tuesday's Saginaw News has prompted some to believe that Satan himself presided over terrorist attacks on the United States.

The picture, shot by an Associated Press photographer, captured the features of a seemingly demonic face—eyes, nose, mouth, beard and horns—as it emerged from the billowing smoke over the World Trade Center, observers say.”

“A photograph of a tourist standing on the outdoor viewing platform of the World Trade Center with a plane about to hit the building began making its way around the Internet. Somehow my photograph fell into the same category with it. The tourist picture was quickly ruled a hoax, but in an unfortunate twist, respected publications like the New York Times and Time Magazine ran stories about the hoaxes on the Internet which included both that image and my image. 20/20 did the same on their show. All have apologized.

How do you prove conclusively that a digital photograph is real?

In the days of film, we always had incontrovertible evidence of the original scene. Negatives in strips showed a progression of images that were linked together by sprocket holes and tangible evidence. Digital files have no connection to the real world. Removable storage cards taken from digital cameras are reused constantly. The original film can be copied and stored numerous times. It is not a negative in any form.

The raw film from the camera is as close to a negative as digital can come. The file was copied immediately to my laptop and erased from the compact flash card used within the camera. This file was stored on a CD and eventually a DVD. Already we are into multiple generations of the same film. So are they all original until they are manipulated? These copies of the film were never brought into Photoshop or any other program. They are still the raw files.

Olympus America, the manufacturer of the digital E-10 Camera that I used, is located on Long Island, New York. John Knaur, manager of Digital Services, was someone I had met at trade shows in Manhattan. His staff became my lifeline of proof.

John informed me that there was hidden information within the file that would tell them if the original digital file had been manipulated with an advanced imaging program such as Photoshop. I immediately sent the original raw file to their offices, both by email and on a CD.

Their reply was swift and incontrovertible. The photograph was the original image produced by my Olympus E-10 digital camera. The memo was immediately posted on my website, stating the image had not been manipulated.

CNN presented as video with a ghostly image that seemed to corroborate my image. Shot from the habor on a 90 degree angle from my image, a devilish character seems to expand outward from the building.

The email messages continued to come at an even faster pace. The writers were sending me their religious histories and equating the photo to the sign that the end of the world was upon us. Others were saying I had been put on the earth to take this photo and that the photo showed who was really behind the attack.”

Watching the World Change: The Stories Behind the Images of 9/11
"Even today, though, Frank, Jr., contends that 'any rational human being looking at that photograph on the computer could come to the same conclusion we came to that weekend. Before that day, we thought it was a horrible experience. But after seeing the picture, I thought 9/11 could be an epiphany of some sort. Or an omen. It depends on which team you're on. I read in the Bible that the city would burn for three months, and it did.' The concept of an apocalyptic conflagration, Frank says, seemed a viable prospect. 'Horrors, trials, and tribulations,' he contends, 'just seemed so hard to dismiss after seeing the coincidences in that picture as a culmination of all the events, the shock, the fear-not knowing what was going to happen next.'

The Internet was surely a party to all this. When Mark D. Phillips, a part-time photojournalist and Web consultant, snapped an image of the smoking towers and gave it to the Associated Press, many viewers first saw his photo in their newspapers or on news Web sites. By the Friday after September 11, several thousand strangers had sent Phillips e-mails. Describing their reactions to his 'Devil' picture. Most saw Satan's countenance in the billows, spreading across the southeast face of the south pillar, like the turbid image on the Shroud of Turin. Others saw bin Laden, or angels, wings, and halos. Here were hordes of Net denizens with fear in their hearts and time on their hands.

Phillips had shot the picture from his Brooklyn rooftop on a brand-new Olympus E-10. He exposed a digital card of twenty-three images and, on a second camera, shot one roll each of slide and color-negative film. He retreated to his apartment office, quickly downloaded his take, resized the first frame, and sent it off at 200 dpi to the wire service. Those at the AP picture desk, Phillips say, were looking at the same image he was, as a reduced 'thumbnail.' 'None of us saw a face,' he contends.

The next day, his photo agent called him, with urgency in his voice: 'You have a face in your photograph.' Phillips went to his computer, opened the picture file, and started trembling. 'It's the Devil's face,' he remembers thinking. 'How did it get in here?' Newspapers ran his shot across their front pages. Charged of image tampering surfaced, which both Phillips and the AP were quick to discount. For authentication, he took his photo to the digital camera division at Olympus, where John Knaur, now the company's senior marketing manager for digital SLRs, helped vet the shot. 'That's around the time Olympus first began to use hidden markers,' Knaur says, 'bits of text data within the picture files. We were able to determine that it was not doctored and was an original file.'

For months, the e-mails continued to flow to Phillips in-box, by the hundreds. 'Three and a half years later,' he says, 'I still get about ten to fifteen a month on that one picture. People are still looking for a reason.'"

point of impact
So the angels made obeisance, all of them together,
But Iblis (did it not); he refused to be with those who made obeisance.
He said: O Iblis! what excuse have you that you are not with those who make obeisance?
He said: I am not such that I should make obeisance to a mortal whom Thou hast created of the essence of black mud fashioned in shape.
He said: Then get out of it, for surely you are driven away:
And surely on you is this curse until the day of judgment.
He said: My Lord! then respite me till the time when they are raised.
He said: So surely you are of the respited ones
Till the period of the time made known.
He said: My Lord! because Thou hast made life evil to me, I will certainly make (evil) fair-seeming to them on earth, and I will certainly cause them all to deviate.

Qur'n 15.30-39

(Allah) said: "Get thee down from this: it is not for thee to be arrogant here: get out, for thou art of the meanest (of creatures).”
He said: "Give me respite till the day they are raised up.” (Allah) said: "Be thou among those who have respite.”
He said: "Because thou hast thrown me out of the way, lo! I will lie in wait for them on thy straight way:
"Then will I assault them from before them and behind them, from their right and their left: Nor wilt thou find, in most of them, gratitude (for thy mercies).”
(Allah) said: "Get out from this, disgraced and expelled. If any of them follow thee,- Hell will I fill with you all.”

Qur'n 7.13-18

Many factors will bring on the disbelievers remorse; their meeting with Allah's punishment, watching their skins testify against them, sensing the terror of eternal suffering, seeing Hell and, comprehending the damnation that is awaiting them. But the worse offenders on Earth will see that Satan, whose path they followed consistently, also has deserted them. The Qur'n recounts what Satan will tell his followers on that Day in the following words:

When the affair is decided, Satan will say: "Allah made you a promise, a promise of truth, and I made you a promise but broke my promise. I had no authority over you, except that I called you and you responded to me. Do not, therefore, blame me, but blame yourselves. I cannot come to your aid, nor you to mine. I reject the way you associated me with Allah before.” The wrongdoers will have a painful punishment. (The Holy Qur'n, 16:22 Ibrahim)

Christian fundamentalists such as Pat Robertson call themselves Christians while preaching hatred and intolerance, which is the exact opposite of the love and tolerance that is the foundation of Christianity. The same is true of Islamic fundamentalists and Islam, the religion of peace and submission. We must be aware that it is not Islam, but of those who distort it into hatred, that call for Jihad. We must beware not of religion, but of those who hide their evil under its cloak. Terrorists and religious fundamentalists are of the same stripe: They serve not God, but fulfill the promise made by Iblis that "I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong.” (The Holy Qur'n 15.32-39 Al-Hijr)

These fundamentalists fools and followers of fanatics will be concerned more about triumphing in the temporary world than striving with all their heart, mind and soul for the eternal Hereafter. Those deluded by Iblis will be fighting, killing, maiming, blowing up, murdering and butchering fellow beings in the name of jihad:

In the Hereafter and before Allah the unbelievers will be extremely angry at their situation and furious with their leaders who led them away from His path. The dispute between those who led and those who followed is revealed, as follows:

"When those who were followed disown those who followed them, and they see the punishment and the connection between them is cut, those who followed will say: "If only we could have another chance, we would disown them just as they have disowned us.” In that way Allah will show them their actions as a cause of anguish and remorse for them. They will never emerge from the Fire.” (The Holy Qur'n, 2:166-67 Al-Baqara)

"They will say on the Day their faces are rolled over in the Fire: "If only we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger!" And they will say: "Our Lord, we obeyed our masters and great men, and they misguided us from the Way. Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them many times over!" (The Holy Qur'n, 33:66-68 Al-Ahzab)

Allah points out that such leaders are one of the factors that lead people away from the Straight Path. These religious fundamentalist have an enormous influence over their followers. Those who submit to these leaders are often deceived into performing evil deeds and thus waste their lives, unable to recognize their mistakes on Earth. When their misdeeds are exposed on this Day, they will begin to blame one another. Regardless of these accusations for being led astray, neither party will be saved from Hell.

Allah describes such leaders in the following terms:

"We made them leaders, summoning to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped. We pursued them with a curse in this world.” (The Holy Qur'n, 28:41-42 Al-Qasas)

"If someone shuts his eyes to the remembrance of the All-Merciful, We assign him a devil who becomes his bosom friend-they debar them from the path, yet they still think they are guided-so that, when he reaches Us, he says: 'If only there was the distance of the two Easts between you and me!' What an evil companion! It will not benefit you today, since you did wrong, that you share equally in the punishment.” (The Holy Qur'n, 43:36-39 Az-Zukhruf)

The Call of Resurrection is now announced, and every individual is responsible for confirming Allah's Call and Universal Message with their own senses of comprehension. They may either announce or denounce His Universal Decree.

The Mighty War which will divide the True Believers (Al-Mu'minun) from the rest of humanity has now begun. The Great News (Al Naba) will force husband to part from unbelieving wife, mother from skeptical child, brother from doubting sister, friends from incredulous friends. They will desert those who reject the Good News.

Again it much be repeated that the only Sacred Sanctuary is meditating within, a solitude task Prophet Muhammad regularly performed in a cave at Mount Hira outside Medina prior to revelation. The Ummah must recognize this great sign that it was while Prophet Muhammad was meditating that Angel Gabriel appeared with the greatest revelations to humankind. It will be in the solitude of meditation that the Believers will be able to cleanse heart, mind and soul of all impurities and, most important of all, feel the Winds of Resurrection flowing out of their hands, head and other parts of the body.

There is no absolutely salvation in the corrupted temples, churches, synagogues, mosques and shrines who will resist Allah's Good News of Qiyamah during the Night of Power! Their guardians will never be able to give Believers the Baptism of Allah (Self-realization) nor trigger the Winds of Qiyamah during this most blessed Night of Al Qadr that precedes the dreaded Morn of Al Qariah!

Those who accept the Sure Signs (Bayyinat) of this universal Call will be looking towards their Lord. They will be the True Believers (Al-Mu'minun). May they never ever forget that Allah only allowed Iblis freedom to mislead till the time of the Resurrection is made known: "He said: So surely you are of the respited ones till the period of the time made known.” (The Holy Qur'n 15:37-8). Those who surrender and submit to the Will of Allah to begin the Resurrection will know that they are indeed free from Iblis who has mislead humanity for centuries.

All Unbelievers (Al-Kafirun) and rejecters of His Grace and Compassion of this Great Announcement, and those who continue killing, butchering, murdering and massacring in His name will be bound for the Eternal Fire. Be cautioned fools and fanatics, be cautioned!

The story of Satan (Shaitaan), his tactics, and methods to ward off his influences and whispers
The dawn of evil started with the arrogance and rebellious nature of Iblees

Shaitan's (also referred to as Satan) enmity with man started when Allah (SWT) created the first man, Adam (alaihis salaam). Satan was from amongst the "jinn" who have been created with the ability to obscure themselves from human sight, and who constitute a world of their own. Allah says in the Holy Quran:

"And (remember) when We said to the angels: Prostrate yourselves unto Adam. So they prostrated themselves except Iblis (Satan). He was one of the jinn; he disobeyed the command of his Lord" (Quran, Al-Kahf: 50).

.”And they prostrated except Iblis (Satan), he refused and was proud and was one of the disbelievers (disobedient to Allah)" (Quran, Al-Baqarah: 34).

Satan's arrogance reinforced by his false logic, and jealousy prevented him from obeying Allah's command. As Allah tells us in the Quran, Satan said, "I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay" (Quran, Al-Aaraf: 12).

Iblees asks for reprieve until Day of Judgement

When Satan refused to obey Allah's commands, Allah asked him for the reasons of disobedience of the Lord or the worlds. Allah says in the Quran:

(Allah) said: "O Iblees (Satan)! What is your reason for not being among the prostrators?”

(Iblees (Satan)) said: "I am not the one to prostrate myself to a human being, whom You created from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud" (Quran, al-Hijr:32:33).

The subsequent dialog stated in the Quran is as follows:

(Allah) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajeem (an outcast or a cursed one).” (Tafseer At-Tabaree).
"And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)" (Quran, al-Hijr: 34:35).

Then Iblees asked for a respite until the Day of Resurrection, and Allah granted him that. Allah says:

(Iblees (Satan)) said: "O my Lord! Give me then respite till the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected.”
Allah said: "Then, verily, you are of those reprieved,
"Till the Day of the time appointed" (Quran, al-Hijr: 36:38).

When Iblees was certain that he was doomed, he resolved to mislead whomever he could from the slaves of Allah, so that they would be with him in Hell. Allah says:

(Iblees (Satan)) said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all.
"Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them" (Quran, al-Hijr: 39:40).

Iblees/ Satan's ultimate goal

After Allah gave him the reprieve until the Day of Judgment, he made misleading man as his primary goal. Allah told us about that in the Quran, "(Iblees) said: Because You have sent me astray, surely, I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You)" (Quran, Al-Aaraf: 16,17).

He has such confidence in ensnaring his victims that he openly declares his strategy of approaching them from all sides and making them succumb to his temptations. The first victims of Satan were Adam (alaihis salam) and Hawwa. Allah says, "Then the Shaitan (Satan) made them slip there from (the Paradise), and got them out from that in which they were. We said: "Get you down, all, with enmity between yourselves. On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment for a time" (Quran, Al-Baqarah: 36).

"And an enjoyment for a time" is what Satan makes the most of. He has decided to make the world appear beautiful and attractive and works on ways to lure man, limit his perspective to the gains, pleasures and enjoyment of this world alone, and make him forget the path that Allah (SWT) has chalked out for all human beings during their stay here.

Satan's ultimate goal is to make people go astray and eventually to turn them into disbelievers, or polytheists at a minimum. The manner in which Satan pursues that goal varies in accordance with the interests and inclinations of his victims. For example, he uses piety to attack the pious; scholarly disciplines to attack scholars; false reasoning and logic for those who take pride in being knowledgeable, and ignorance to attack the ignorant. Allah (SWT) Has warned us in the Holy Quran:

"O Children of Adam! Let not Shaitan (Satan) deceive you, as he got your parents (Adam and Eve) out of Paradise," (Quran, Al-Aaraf: 27).

.” . . and follow not the footsteps of Shaitan (Satan). Surely he is to you an open enemy" (Quran, Al-Anaam: 142).

So, Allah has made it clear to mankind that Satan is their enemy and Satan's goal is to divert mankind from the goal that Allah established for them, which is to follow and worship Allah by obeying His commands. Satan's goal is to make mankind disobey Allah and divert them to the hell fire in the hereafter, which will also be Satan's abode. Allah says in the Quran:

"Surely, Shaitan (Satan) is an enemy to you, so take (treat) him as an enemy. He only invites his Hizb (followers) that they may become the dwellers of the blazing Fire" (Faatir 35:6).

Shaitan is the source of all evil

Everything that happens among the sons of Adam of kufr (disbelief of the Truth), murder, enmity, hatred, the spread of immorality and fornication, the public wanton display of women's beauty, drinking alcohol, worshipping idols and other major sins, is all the work of Satan to corrupt mankind and to drive people from following the way of Allah and drag them to the Fire of Hell with him. So, let's remember that when we find ourselves around evil or being lured by it, Satan is engaged in his work and our task is to fend off his plans. Allah says in the Quran: "And if an evil whisper from Shaitan (Satan) tries to turn you away (O Muhammad) (from doing good), then seek refuge in Allah. Verily, He is the All Hearer, the All Knower" (Quran, Fussilat: 36).

Ways in which Satan approaches us

Satan approaches man through stealthy means. Allah (SWT) cautions us in the Quran with this verse:

"Verily, he and Qabiluhu (his soldiers from the jinn or his tribe) see you from where you cannot see them" (Quran, Aal-e-Imran: 27).

The following are some of the ways in which Satan approaches man to invite him toward evil.

Provokes rebelliousness. After establishing the supremacy of one's ego in one's heart, Satan encourages the person to become rebellious and to reject the laws and rules established by Allah the All Mighty. He leads men to their suspicion, questioning and argumentation in sheer obduracy. In a world where human weakness from temptations and weakness of faith abound, Satan influences man into ignoring and belittling the words of Allah stated in the Quran. He thus overly engages man into running after the worldly goals at the expense of violating divine commandments. Let's not forget that when we engage in this form of rebellion where our hearts start to ignore or reject the truth, we risk doing exactly what Satan did, as we see from the verse where Allah said, "except Iblees (Satan), he refused and was proud and was one of the disbelievers (disobedient to Allah)" (Quran, al-Baqarah: 34). Let's ensure, therefore, that our actions and thoughts do not lead us to rebel against Allah's message that He revealed to His Messenger.

Weakens one's faith and Eeman in Al-Qadr (Allah's Divine Will). Believing in Allah's will is an integral part of a Muslim's faith. Another common way for the Satan is, therefore, to make us compare our situations with those around us and leads us to feeling discontented with Allah's will. Satan thus diverts our attention from accepting the will of Allah to focusing on those who may have more of this life's luxuries and thus arousing feelings of envy and jealousy. He also presents this life as the sole prize that cannot be missed and thus induces in us discontentment with our present situations in life.

As Muslims, let's ensure that we do not let Satan play with our imagination, conjuring up rosy pictures of the unattainable, making us visualize what could have been or should have been our destiny thus weakening our faith in Al Qadr. As Muslims, we should never forget Allah's "Will" in the ultimate determination of our destinies. We should also remember the Day of Judgment when all accounts will be settled and appropriate dues will be paid. "And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full" (Quran, Aal-e-Imran: 185). Also, as Allah says in the Quran, "And you cannot will unless (it be) that Allah wills the Lord of the Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists)" (Quran, al-Takweer: 29).

Instills feelings of pride and Ar-Riya (showing off). When one does good deeds, Satan is quick to instill feelings of pride followed by the desire to show off one's virtues or achievements (also referred to as Ar-Riya). He diverts his victim's mind from vying for the deed's rewards from Allah to expecting praise to flow from people instead. As Muslims, let's not forget that the payoff that we desire for our deeds reflects the nature of the intention of doing those deeds. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) says: "The most fearful thing I fear for you is Minor Shirk.” He (Peace be upon him) was asked about it, and he said: "It is (Ar-Riy) showing off.” Then, he (Peace be upon him) explained it saying, “A man stands in prayer, performs it more beautifully and properly than ever, because he notices someone looking at him" (Imam Ahmed).

Induces conceit in a person who has accomplishments to his credit> Satan also induces false confidence in a person making him feel that he has reached perfection or that he is far better than others. This leads to vanity, self-admiration and distancing one from reality. As a result, the person starts viewing others patronizingly. We should, therefore, constantly remember Allah and look for opportunities of doing good deeds. Most of us know the story of the prostitute from the nation of Children of Israel who saved a dog from dying thirsty and as a result of that deed was entered in paradise. Similarly, we also know the story of the lady who trapped her cat and made her die of hunger and as a result was sent to hell fire. This is why the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "one of you may do the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is nothing between him and it but a cubit, then the decree overtakes him and he does a deed of the people of Hell and enters it. And one of you may do the deeds of the people of Hell until there is nothing between him and it but a cubit, then the decree overtakes him and he does a deed of the people of Paradise, and enters it" (al-Bukhaari (3208) and Muslim (2643) from Ibn Masood).

Uses laziness and procrastination to keep one away from good deeds. We should realize that when Satan fails to make us rebel against the key truths of Islam, he uses other tactics to distance us from our basic obligations by using the tools of laziness and procrastination, and belittling in our minds the importance of those obligations. For example, even though many Muslims recognize the obligation to pray regularly, they fail to follow through in getting regular in such worships. In one of the hadiths narrated by Abu Hurayrah, he mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The Shaitan ties three knots at the back of the head of any one of you when he goes to sleep, striking each knot and saying: "You have a long night ahead, so sleep.” If he wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone. If he does wudoo, two knots are undone. If he prays, all the knots are undone, and he starts the day energetic and in a good mood. Otherwise, he starts his day in a bad mood and feeling lazy" (al-Bukhaari (3269) and Muslim (776)).

Sets one Muslim against another Satan works on a common human weakness related to making one quickly assume something negative about the other. He thus infuses suspicion and doubt in the hearts of Muslims making them think badly about one another, and provoking them against one another. For example, Satan considers sowing the seeds of discord between a husband and wife as one of his greatest achievements. The Prophet (S.A.W.S) said: "Iblis places his throne upon water; he then sends detachments (for creating dissension between people); the nearer to him in rank are those who are most notorious in creating dissension. One of them comes and says: "I did so and so.” And he says: "You have done nothing.” Then one amongst them comes and says: "I did not spare so and so until I sowed the seed of discord between a husband and a wife.” Satan goes near him and says: "You have done well.” He then embraces him" (Sahih Muslim and narrated by Jabir Ibn Abdullah).

Pushes obligatory deeds to the background. within Islam, obligatory duties take precedence as they establish the Muslim's identity and foundation of belief. When Satan's efforts to influence the staunch believer hit a dead end, he attempts to make the recommended lawful deeds appear more inviting than obligatory duties thus pulling the believers away from the obligatory duties of Islam. For example, helping and supporting parents and family members is more important than helping friends. Similarly, praying the five obligatory prayers in congregation is more important than praying Taraweeh prayers. We should, therefore, be careful in not sacrificing the obligatory deeds at the expense of the less important deeds.

Finally, at the end, whom do we blame and what will Satan say?

So, at the end on the Day of Judgment when we are all made to account for what we had done in this life, we won't be able to blame Satan for the bad deeds that we did because of how he had incited us. Rather, this is what Satan will say on the Day of Judgment (as Allah tells us in the Quran):

"And Shaitan (Satan) will say when the matter has been decided: Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth. And I too promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you, and you responded to me. So blame me not, but blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I deny your former act in associating me (Satan) as a partner with Allah (by obeying me in the life of the world). Verily, there is a painful torment for the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers)" (Quran, Ibraaheem: 22).

There's much to ponder about in this verse. Here are the key points:

Satan knows the real truth of Allah's message. We know this because he will say, "Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth.” He will continue to say later, "I deny your former act in associating me (Satan) as a partner with Allah (by obeying me in the life of the world).”
Satan will mock us by pushing the burden back on us. He would say, "I called you, and you responded to me"
Satan would not even accept the blame and instead will put the blame on us. He would say, "So blame me not, but blame yourselves"

The remedy ways to protect ourselves

In spite of all the tactics that Satan uses to mislead mankind, he is not able to hurt those of Allah's slaves who are aware of Satan's tactics, and use their defenses provided them by Allah to ward off those tactics. Allah says in the Quran:

"(Iblis (Satan)) said: By Your Might, then I will surely mislead them all. Except Your chosen slaves amongst them (i.e. faithful, obedient, true believers of Islamic Monotheism).” (Quran, Saad: 82-83).

Allah said to Satan:

"Certainly, you shall have no authority over My slaves, except those who follow you of the Ghawun (Mushrikun and those who go astray, criminals, polytheists, and evil-doers)" (Quran, Al-Hijr: 42).

The following are some of the defenses that we can use to keep Satan from exerting his influence over us.

Ignore Satanic whispers (waswaas). One of the effective ways to ignore Satanic whispers is to first be aware of them and then once recognized, to ignore them. So, we should be quick to recognize that when we feel being driven by our temptations to do bad or succumb to a feeling of laziness or procrastination to do good, we should ignore that waswaas. It is worth quoting here what Ibn Hajar al-Haythami (may Allah have mercy on him) said about dealing with waswasah in his book al-Fataawa al-Fiqhiyyah al-Kubra (1/149). This is what he said: "He was asked about the problem of waswasah (insinuating whispers from the Shaitan), and whether there is a remedy for it. He replied that there is an effective remedy for it, which is to ignore them completely, no matter how frequently they may come to mind. When these whispers are ignored, they do not become established; rather they go away after a short time, as many people have experienced. But for those who pay attention to them and act upon them, they increase until they make him like one who is insane or even worse, as we see among many of those who have suffered from them and paid attention to them and to the devil whose task it is to insinuate these whispers, whom the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) warned us against, as was explained in Sharh Mishkaat al-Anwaar.

In al-Saheehayn there is a report which supports what has been mentioned above, which is that whoever suffers from waswaas should seek refuge with Allah and turn away from the waswaas. So think about this effective remedy which was taught by the one who does not speak of his own whims and desires to his ummah, and understand that whoever is deprived of this is deprived of all goodness, because waswasah comes from Satan, according to scholarly consensus, and Satan has no other desire than to make the believers go astray, make them confused, make their life a misery, and cause them distress to the extent that they leave Islam without realizing it.

Faith and Trust in Allah. Allah says in the Holy Quran: "Verily! He (Satan) has no power over those who believe and put their trust only in their Lord (Allah)" (Quran, An-Nahl: 99). The message, therefore, is clear and that is to direct our attention not to what works in helping Satan in his goals but to do what our Creator wants for us. Allah says in the Holy Quran: "And whoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (of every difficulty). And he will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine" (Quran, At-Talaq: 2-3).

Fearing Allah and not His Creation. Another weapon used by Satan is that of inducing fear in the hearts of weak human beings. He tries to frighten the believers with apprehension of various consequences and difficulties in following the Straight Path. Allah tells us in the Quran: "Shaitan (Satan) threatens you with poverty and orders you to commit Fahsha (evil deeds, sins, illegal sexual activities, etc.) whereas Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself and Bounty, and Allah is All-Sufficient for His creature's needs, All-Knower" (Quran, al-Baqarah: 268).

Allah warns us that one of Satan's tactics is to make us fear His creation. He says in the Quran: "It is only Shaitan (Satan) that suggests to you the fear of his Auliya (supporters and friends (polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad); so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers" (Quran, Aal-e-Imran: 175).

Recite Dhikr. We should use Allah's remembrance (Dhikr-Allah) to ward off waswaas. Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said that "When the Shaitan hears dhikr (remembrance of Allah) he slinks away, and Laa ilaaha ill-Allah is the best of dhikr, and the most effective remedy for warding off waswasah is to remember Allah a great deal.”

Obtaining Islamic knowledge (from the Right Sources). Taking heed of Satan's ways and becoming aware of his plans and goal can help us to be alert to his influence or persuasion and keep our defenses up. For this, it is essential to acquire Islamic knowledge from the right sources. It is very difficult for Satan to approach those dedicated to learning. Let us reflect upon what Imam Shafai said: "All humans are dead except those who have knowledge; and all those who have knowledge are asleep except those who do good deeds; and those who do good deeds are deceived except those who are sincere; and those who are sincere are always in a state of worry.”

Taking refuge and shelter in Allah. Allah says in the Holy Quran: "And if an evil whisper comes to you from Shaitan (Satan), then seek refuge with Allah. Verily, He is All-Hearer, All-Knower" (Quran, Al-Aaraf: 200). One of the other ways to seek refuge from Satan is to recite the last two chapters of the Holy Quran, namely Surat Al-Falaq (The Daybreak) and Surat An-Nas (Mankind), by supplicating for Allah's Protection, and seeking the Most Merciful's forgiveness for one's sins constantly.

Being thankful to Allah for the gift of Eeman and seeking His Protection for it. Let us remember that the confidence Satan expressed in his success to mislead people, stems from his assurance that most people are ungrateful to their Creator, Lord and Master Allah the All Mighty. Allah says in the Quran that Satan claimed: .” . . and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You).” (Quran, Al-Aaraf: 17). It is, therefore, man's ingratitude to Allah that Satan banks upon in getting man off track. So one of the antidotes to Satanic whispers is to be in a state of constant consciousness of Allah (SWT), and thankfulness for all His Blessings upon us.

To conclude, as and when we fall to our temptations to commit the wrong, let''s remind ourselves that even Satan knows the truth, yet he is determined to make us earn Allah's anger. However, at the end on the Day of Judgment he will simply say, "So blame me not, but blame yourselves.” The Story of Satan (Shaitaan)

LAA UQSIM BI-YAWM AL-QIYAMAH;
WA-LAA UQSIM BI-AN-NAFSAL-LAWWAAMAH
I do call to witness the Resurrection Day;
And I do call to witness the self-reproaching Spirit.

The Holy Qur'an

Concerning what are they disputing?
Concerning the Great News. [5889]
About which they cannot agree.
Verily, they shall soon (come to) know!
Verily, verily they shall soon (come to) know!

surah 78:1-5 Al Naba' (The Great News)

"5889. Great News: usually understood to mean the News or Message of the Resurrection.”

Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur'n, Amana Corporation, 1989.

Types of Kufr (Disbelief)—Adapted from 'Tafseer ibn Katheer'

1. Kufrul-'Inaad: Disbelief out of stubbornness;
2. Kufrul-Inkaar: Disbelief out of denial;
3. Kufrul-Kibr: Disbelief out of arrogance and pride;
4. Kufrul-Juhood: Disbelief out of rejection;
5. Kufrul-Nifaaq: Disbelief out of hypocrisy;
6. Kufrul-Kurh: Disbelief out of detesting any of Allah's commands;
7. Kufrul-Istihzaha: Disbelief due to mockery and derision;
8. Kufrul-I'raadh: Disbelief due to avoidance;

In Abdullah Yusuf Ali's commentary Kufr, Kafara, Kafir, and derivative forms of the word imply a deliberate rejection of faith, revelation and truth of the Holy Qur'n: "The culmination of Allah's Revelation is in the Qur'n, which confirms previous scriptures, corrects the errors which men introduced into them, and explains many points in detail for all who seek right worship and service to Allah-whether they inherit the previous Books or not. It is a universal Message ... The worst and most hardened sinner is the man to whom Allah's Signs are actually brought home and who yet prefers Evil and turns away from the Light of Allah. The Signs may be in the words and guidance of a great Teacher or in some sorrow or warning, but from which he deliberately refuses to profit. The penalty-the Nemesis-must necessary come eventually.”

According to Ibn Taymiyah (1263-1328) "kufr is the attribute of everyone who rejects something that God has commanded us to believe in, after news of that has reached him, whether he rejects it in his heart without uttering it, or he speaks those words of rejection without believing it in his heart, or he does both; or he does an action which is described in the texts as putting one beyond the pale of faith.”

"Just as faith for Muslims has to do not with believing but with knowing, so kufr, rejection, is not a lack of belief, not an intellectual position that holds that something is otherwise than is the case, and certainly it is not mere ignorance. Rather it, too, like its correlative iman, presupposes knowledge; for it is an active repudiation of what one knows to be true. This is why it is a sin, and indeed a (the) monstrous sin. It is the one final, cosmic (or some would say, the one final human) wrong; the deliberate saying of 'no' to what one knows to be right.” (Wilfred Cantwell Smith On understanding Islam: selected studies, page 154)

"Say 'See ye if the (Revelation) is (really) from Allah, and yet ye reject it? Who is more astray than one who is in a schism far (from any purpose)?' Soon will We show them Our Signs in the Regions (of the earth) and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth.”- Quran 41:52-53. The Resurrection is a universal Message for all humanity. To confirm the absolute truth and evidence of its commencement Allah (SWT) and His Ruh have already shown ample and irrefutable Signs on Earth (exoteric/physical/external/ macrocosm) and souls of children (esoteric/spiritual/inner/microcosm). Abdullah Yusuf Ali's footnotes of surah 41:52-53 exhort human beings to deeply examine and introspect those Signs and Revelations: "Examine your own souls. See if you do not really find something unusual in Allah's Revelation! If you do, and yet you reject it, what a terrible responsibility fastens itself on you? Could anything be more foolish or more misguided than to reject a Message which is transforming the whole world?”

Therefore most of the Al-Kufr ul Akbar (major disbeliefs) are applicable to those rejecting or disbelieving Allah's (SWT) Signs and surahs upholding the collection, promulgation, recital, explanation and warning of the following:

i) His Call to witness Al-Qiyamah (The Resurrection);
ii) His Call to witness His Ruh (self-reproaching Spirit);
iii) His Call to heed Al Naba (The Great News);
iv) His Call to participate in Al Qadr (The Night of Power and Destiny);
v) His Call to confirm His Revelations, Signs, and Warnings (of i-iv).

Thus kaffir (non-believer) here is applied to all humankind, both Muslim and non-Muslim, who reject the Call that God has commanded us to believe in after His Revelations, Signs and Warnings have reached us. The Qur'n clearly warns that many will disbelief, even mock, the Great News and Sure Signs of Al-Qiyamah.

So be forewarned, and in the Hereafter never deny deliverance of this clear Warning: "O ye assembly of Jinns and men! came there not unto you messengers from amongst you, setting forth unto you My signs, and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?” Qur'n 6.130

And those still rejecting, hesitant or unable to make up their minds even after hearing the Great News and shown the Signs, Allah (SWT) questions: "Are they waiting until the Hour comes to them suddenly? All the Signs thereof have already come. Once the Hour comes to them, how will they benefit from their message?” "Why do they not study the Quran carefully? Do they have locks on their minds?” Qur'n 47:18-24

The last paragraph is yet another warning from Allah (SWT) that prior to the Wrath of the End (Al Qariah) humans are offered the Mercy of the Resurrection (Al Qadr). And once the Hour of Al Qariah comes to them, how will they benefit from their contemporary message of Al Qadr i.e., from the Great News of the messengers from amongst you? How will those reading these lines benefit if they continue to doubt and wait, and the Striking Day comes suddenly? What use then will be the Mercy and Compassion of Al Qadr (Night of Destiny) if the morn of the Al Qariah (Striking Day) ends His Peace? Why doesn't the Ummah then not study the Quran with painstaking effort to avoid the errors, mistranslation and ignorance of the ulema that have presently paralyzed their minds from believing the Great News? Why don't they use their own brains and intelligence to understand Al Qiyamah, the heart and soul of the living, breathing Quran? Living and breathing because God Almighty is now talking directly to you through His Holy Book! After all, it is Allah (SWT) who has now called out to all Believers with this Decree: "I do call to witness the Resurrection Day; And I do call to witness the self-reproaching Spirit.” He is specifically addressing you in particular (and Believers is general) to do so!

Only now in this modern age of universal education, mass media and publishing technology-after 14 centuries and unlike the illiterate past-is it possible to own and be sufficiently literate to "study the Quran carefully" in languages they understand best.* And just in case the Believers start studying the entire Qur'n, it must be stressed that Allah (SWT) is referring specifically to those eschatological Signs and surahs upholding His Call to bear witness of the Resurrection! They must thoroughly examine and understand the Signs that have already manifested, and set forth by messengers from amongst themselves.

Without question, to "study the Quran carefully" means using one's own mental faculties, not those of the ulema (Muslim clergy) who have for centuries put "locks on their minds" and are the very reason for the Ummah's present predicament i.e., their unprecedented kaffir-like mindset, reaction, rejection and mocking of His Call, Signs and Great News of the Resurrection. They must know that during Al Qadr no 'graves are going to open up' as this is His Night of Compassion and Mercy. So "Peace!... This until the rise of the morn!" (Quran 97:5)

“There is so much blind faith, there is so much of wrong ideas, so much of organizational fortresses they have built. All kinds of nonsensical things are going on in this world, but they'll all be finished.”

The Messiah-Paraclete-Ruh-Devi
Vienna, Austria, 8 June 1988

"We are now in the Blossom Time, as I call it, because many flowers are born and they are to become the fruits. This is the Resurrection Time, which is described in all the scriptures. But it's not like this, the way they had described us. Something wrong with them that all the dead bodies who are in the graves will come out of the graves. I mean, how much is left out of them, God knows. Must be some bones or maybe some skulls there. So they'll come out of the graves and they will get their Resurrection!!!? This is a very wrong idea.

Once I happened to meet a fellow, a Muslim from Bosnia and he told Me, 'I want to die for my religion, for God's sake.' I said, 'But why? Who told you to die?' He said, 'Now, if I die in the name of God, I'll be resurrected.' I said, 'It's all wrong. That's not the way it is going to work out. Resurrection is going to work out this way that at this time, all these souls will take their birth. All these souls will take their birth and they will be resurrected. As human beings they'll have to come.'

That's why we find all kinds of funny people these days, all kinds of cruel, criminal, all kinds of idiotic, stupid, I mean very queer, weird, funny ideas which find such, such a variety of people and such a tremendous population that we should understand they have to have their chance of Resurrection. But how many will come? That's the point. How many are going to come?”

The Messiah-Paraclete-Ruh-Devi

So Peace to all Believers bearing witness to the Resurrection (Al-Qiyamah)! So Peace to all Believers bearing witness to His self-reproaching Spirit (Ruh)! So Peace to all Believers resurrecting themselves during this blessed Night of Power and Destiny (Al Qadr)! So Peace to all Believers of the Great News (Al Naba)! So Peace until the dreadful morn of the Great Calamity, the Striking Day (Al Qariah) against the Unbelievers (Al-Kafirun)!

Last, but not the least, the Qur'n insists that ample warning of impending calamity must be always delivered by His messengers:

"That is because thy Lord would never destroy the cities unjustly, while their inhabitants were heedless.” (Quran 6.131);
"Never did We destroy a population, but had its warners - By way of reminder; and We never are unjust.” (Quran 26:208-209);
"And never did Thy Lord destroy the townships, till He had raised up in their mother-town a messenger reciting unto them Our revelations.” (Quran 27:59);

This cardinal rule has been expressly complied with and Warning of the impending Great Calamity repeatedly announced and fearlessly upheld by the incarnation of His Ruh for more than three decades until Her retirement in 2008 at the age of 85. (Since Jesus is the mandatory Sign of the Hour [Quran 43:61], and as the Comforter promised and sent by God Almighty in Jesus' name, She has also ceaselessly glorified Christ and His Message of the Last Judgment.)

“I should do something to bring sense to these people (humanity). Something should happen to them otherwise what I see is a complete disaster. It is going to happen. I do not want to frighten you like Mrs. Thatcher does about the Russians. That might be imaginary. But this is real. I am warning you that the Disaster is going to come as destruction itself.”

The Messiah-Paraclete-Ruh-Devi

"The Last Judgment has started. We are facing the Last Judgment today. We are not aware of it. And all the satanic forces have come out like the wolves in sheep's clothes. And they are trying to attract you and you do not judge them. You only sit down and judge the Reality. It has started! It is a fact! It has started!"

The Messiah-Paraclete-Ruh-Devi
Kingston, UK, 6 November 1980

"I have such respect for so many of them (Muslims). I wish they could accept that this is not Jihad time anymore but Qiyamah Time, the Resurrection Time, the Blossom Time. Are they going to miss it?”

The Messiah-Paraclete-Ruh-Devi

—"Muslim illiteracy worldwide stands at about 51 percent for all age groups over fifteen. Despite a rapid increase in primary school enrollment, only 45 percent of Muslim children aged six to eleven attend primary school. An even larger gap exists at higher levels of research.”- Martin S. Kramer, Arab awakening and Islamic revival, 1996, page 280;
—"The vast majority of Muslims do not speak Arabic as their native tongue"- Christine Huda Dodge, The everything understanding Islam, 2003, page 21;
—"The degree of knowledge of Arabic determines a person's understanding of the Islamic creed. The Quran, the Hadith and Sira traditions (Prophetic sayings and actions), and the writings of the early Islamic scholars and jurists were in Arabic. Imam Shafei (767- 820), the founder of the Shafei School of Sunni jurisprudence, advocated that every Muslim should learn Arabic, at least to the point of reciting the Quran (Hourani 1991, 68). Most non-Arab Muslims do not understand Arabic.”- Elie Elhadj, The Islamic Shield, 2006, page 22;
—"If your mother tongue is not Arabic, Satan (or his troops) will encourage you to read the Quran in Arabic. Why does he do that? Because he knows that you will not understand enough of it. The majority of those who learn Arabic to study the Quran do not excel enough to understand the implication or interpretation of certain words when used in a special way in the Arabic language. They will have a lot of shortcomings. Many Pakistani and Indian Muslims are forced as children to read the Quran in Arabic and still as adults read the Quran in Arabic but they do not understand a single word of what they read... The Quran is a message, not just another beautiful language book. If you cannot read it in Arabic do not wait until the day you excel in your Arabic language, because this day may never come. Trust God and know that He is the teacher of the Quran. He will teach in any language and to any nationality, He created all things. Read your Quran today, (do not wait any longer,) in any language that you can understand and master and leave the rest to God.”Dr. Rashad Khalifa, Ph.d.

“The Khartoum, Sudan-based National Islamic Front (NIF) - the political umbrella organization to which AIM answers - did not take long to look for the appropriate solutions for the challenges in Bosnia- Herzegovina...

Being a theologically driven movement, the NIF supreme leadership sought legal precedents to serve as a guideline for the nature of jihad which they believe should be waged in Bosnia, Palestine, and Kashmir. In mid-August 1995, Khartoum informed the AIM senior officials in the front line - in such places as Sarajevo, Muzzaffarabad (Pakistan), and Damascus - of the precedent found.

The NIF leadership pointed to the text of "fatwa originally issued by the Islamic Religious Conference held in El-Obaeid, State of Kordofan (Sudan), on April 27, 1993. It is presently used in Khartoum, at the highest levels of NIF, as the precedent-setting text for legislating relations between Muslims and non-Muslims in areas where the infidels are not willing to be simply subdued by the Muslim forces. The following places - Palestine, Bosnia, and Kashmir - are stated explicitly as areas to where the principles outlined by this fatwa are most applicable...

"Therefore, the rebels who are Muslims and are fighting against the Muslim state are hereby declared kaffirs (infidels) who are standing up against the efforts of preaching, proselytization, and spreading Islam into Africa. However, Islam has justified the fighting and killing of both categories without any hesitation whatsoever...”states the fatwa.”

Bodansky, Offensive in the Balkans

(Mr. Bodansky is a world renowned expert on terrorism and Director of Research of the International Strategic Studies Association. These are excerpts from chapter 8 of his book, Offensive in the Balkans)

“The real sad commentary on the present day is that after a difficult and tortuous journey, Western civilisation had reached a point, where religious belief was of no significant political portent. Yet now, religion is back on the public agenda; in fact, we're choking on god related issues.

And now, after the atrocity in Bali, religion as a pretext for an all encompassing war, though not explicitly stated, is right back in the public mind. I fear that the world is being gripped by war psychosis, fuelled with ancient but not forgotten religious animosity. And it is here that the danger lies of ushering in another long era of the Dark Ages. All sides, and particularly Islamic minds, need to concentrate on what future we wish to see for mankind.

The alternative is truly ghastly. The prospect of a new Dark Age, filled with irrational certainty, divinely sanctioned murder and brutal imposition of a dominant ideology on a luckless minority, fills this commenter with nothing but dread.”

S.R.Judah, October 16, 2002

“Muslims can and will live side to side with both Christians and Jews. It must not be forgotten that we Muslims will continue our struggle for the propagation of truth, tranquility, and true peace, until the flags of The (True) Islamic State decorate the entire world's landscape. Then mankind will be elevated from the worship of other Men and Material Goods, to the worship of the Creator of All Men, and the Universe.”

Abu Salam, USA

“As long as the government is divided equally between Muslims and Christians there will not be any peace in Africa. Africa's main strength is religion, unlike the west which relies mostly on technology. In order to live peacefully we have to respect other people's religion but in Africa if a Christian rules even with minority Christians they call it a Christian state and give no respect for the rest others.”

Amanuel Tecle, Eritrea

“Islam cannot co-exist with any other religion, as it is a backward and an authoritarian religion. Muslims cannot live in peace with anyone including him or herself. The majority of the world's problems are due to this priggish religion.”

AJ, UK

“Islam is in its origins an Arab religion. Everyone not an Arab who is a Muslim is a convert. Islam is not simply a matter of conscience or private belief. It makes imperial demands. A convert's world view alters. His holy places are in Arab lands: his sacred language is Arabic. His idea of history alters. He rejects his own; he becomes, whether he likes it or not, a part of the Arab story.... People develop fantasies about who and what they are; and in the Islam of converted countries there is an element of neurosis and nihilism. These countries can easily set in the boil.”

V.S. Naipaul, Beyond Belief
